Biffa Waste Services is currently looking for a combined Site and Hazpak Chemist to visit customer locations in order to identify, list and prepare for safe onward transport, all waste streams as required by the customer. This will involve handling small containers of chemicals and packing them into larger containers and placing them on pallets to prevent damage during transport. Pumping of liquid wastes into containers may also be required too.

To help generate sufficient information to identify and classify waste materials so that safety and handling advice can be presented to persons handling the material.

Paramount to the role is that waste is assessed and handled in an approved manner ensuring Health, Safety and Environmental compliance are met.

Types of facilities visited are Schools, Colleges and Universities, R&D laboratories, military bases, airports, CA sites, Chemical manufacturing facilities, DIY Superstores etc.

Principal Accountabilities:

-To undertake work at other facilities including customers premises. This may involve travelling and nights out.

Provide technical assistance, waste packing and collection services to customers.

-To maintain a high level of housekeeping in all areas at all times whilst working.

Keep abreast of Health, Safety and Environmental legislation and Company policy to ensure defined standards and best practice are implemented.

-To maintain necessary documentation and inspect wastes for conformity and container integrity prior to movement. Gather and record sufficient detail that, where feasible, waste can be compliantly removed on the day to a suitable facility. Transfer sufficient detail to company systems that will allow waste to be accepted onto site and processed. For larger jobs, record sufficient information in a manner that captures enough detail that will allow collections to be processed by stakeholders so that all waste is collected first time.

-To create load plans to aid drivers segregate incompatible chemicals for transport.

Undertake liquid pumping services from damaged / unsuitable containment into suitable containers to facilitate subsequent removal of waste from site to the customer’s satisfaction.

-To respond to sales enquiries ensuring timely turnaround in the costing of work where you have visited a site. Based on information supplied by sales / customer services advise them on the time / volumes of packing materials involved in undertaking any given Hazpack work that will assist in providing costing’s for provision of this services to a customer site.

-Help develop operating procedures and risk assessments for specific packing jobs.

-Control contractors, visitors and incoming waste to the site/area where you are working.

-Promote a positive Health and Safety Culture with conscientious near miss/Hazard spotting reporting and zero LTI’s. When working on Biffa and customer sites, ensure specified PPE is utilised and work is carried out within the guidelines of the company SOP’s, ensuring that any additional site PPE requirements are complied with in order to allow safe working.

-Help the Customer Services and Sales teams resolve any queries, e.g. QLS, non-conformance that customers may have relating to a Hazpack job resulting in quick resolution of problems for transfer stations and allowing for additional charges, where applicable.

Nature and Scope:

Accountability, Planning and Timescales

-Provide site attendance within 7 days of provision of a valid requirement

-Recording site attendance in a shared electronic calendar

-Upload and notify stakeholders that details of a job have been uploaded within 72 hours of site visit.

-Take, transport and deliver samples to analytical laboratory destinations as specified by sales/CSC

-Notifying customers of intention to attend site on any given date and keeping them updated of any variations

-Weekly reporting of activity statistics as required by management

-To be able to manage job complexity to prevent incompatible materials being packed in the same drums (comply to packing standards)

-Create electronic packing lists that can be manipulated to the requirements of the technical department, collection and sales

-To ensure materials we cannot accept are not packed for delivery to our transfer operations.

-Utilise chemical knowledge and consider environmental factors (rusty drums / brittle plastic) to efficiently and safely assess waste and packages for suitability to transport in the presented state. Be able to determine when alternative or over packaging may be required.

-Perform Risk assessments

-Understand the requirements of ADR with respect to vehicle equipment and PPE for the transport of small volumes of dangerous goods and hazardous waste.

Autonomy and Constraints

-The hazpacker will be expected to organise workload within the agreed constraints of SLA's of any given contract, and in any case within the KPI already stated.

-They will be expected to correspond with the customer to manage any variations or postponements

-The hazpacker will be expected to complete and upload (where necessary) all paperwork required to facilitate consignment of any given load to include but not limited to PTAF, WDD, Tanker RA’s. This will include uploading MSDS where available

-The hazpackers will work with the appropriate risk assessments and standard operating procedures to ensure safe working

-The hazpackers will comply with any additional PPE requirements demanded of any given customer site

-Utilise Stop and Think pads as necessary

-Attend any necessary meetings

-Completion of legal paperwork as a result of questioning customer about waste profiles combined with use of spot test determination kits, and consideration of processes carried out by the industry and types of waste they are likely to generate

-Customer interaction - Ability to communicate with diverse profile of people from Director to yard operative.

-Biffa – OSS Manager / Sales and RSM/Sector Managers / National Accounts / Customer Services / Transfer Station Managers / Technical Department / IWM / Traffic Despatchers / Transfer Station Chemists / Treatment Plant Managers

-Third Party Disposal site staff

-Be willing to undergo any reasonable work or personal security check that will allow them to access restricted sites (eg airside access at airports)

Person Specification:

* IT literate – Using MS Office

* Proven record of working to clearly defined KPI’s

* Knowledge & understanding of the hazards associated with chemical functional groups and relevant laws

* Able to interpret a safety data sheet

* Knowledge & understanding of the chemical hazards associated with COSHH symbols and associated road transport diamonds

* Knowledge and understanding of the requirements of working within an time critical hazardous waste environment
