Principle Engineer – Technology Bristol

We are currently recruiting for a Principal Engineer to lead a diverse team of engineering professionals and consultants operating predominately in the Intelligent Transport Systems (Highways and Rail) sector.

Reporting to the Associate Director –SIAM, the role encompasses a broad range of activities from ensuring Health and Safety, leading the team, developing new business, ensuring high quality project deliverables, managing contracts, controlling finances and effective line management, amongst others.

The role has three key objectives:

* Ensuring the high-quality delivery, within budget and contractual terms, of professional services to our external and internal clients

* Increasing the quality, number and success rate of new business proposals

* Contributing to the professional development of our people leading to long term growth of a profitable Technology business


* Ensuring 100% of appraisals are undertaken within the team, appropriate objectives and targets are set and appraisals are written up in line with company timeframes

* Mentoring, coaching and supporting resources (technical and administrative) to develop their skills and strengthen the overall capability of the business

* Day to day leadership, management and oversight of the team’s business development and project delivery requirements including ensuring the health, safety and well-being of team members in their day to day activities

* Assisting in ensuring the profitability (in line with Business Plan targets) and high utilisation (>85%) of the SIAM team resources

* Winning “deliverable” work commensurate with the team’s skillsets, on appropriate commercial terms and in line with the overall business strategy including writing compelling proposals and undertaking bid related tasks

* Supporting the Associate Director –SIAM in developing and maintaining a comprehensive marketing plan for the Smart Infrastructure team, including definition of services, products and key target client

Essential Skills/Qualifications

* Degree/HNC educated in an Engineering or a related discipline

* Professionally accredited with a relevant Institution

* Project Management Qualification (PRINCE2/APM)

* Highly proficient in the use of Microsoft Office

* Relevant and appropriate technical knowledge

* Management of diverse teams (skills and geographically)

* Self-starting and motivated to “get the job done” with a “right first time” mentality

* Strong commercial experience, including financial and contractual management

* Knowledge of and experience in using various forms of contract particularly NEC3

* Demonstrable client management skills in a professional environment

* Successful record of developing proposals for the delivery of projects and services for clients

* Ability to multi-task and prioritise often conflicting demands on time

* A solid demonstrable understanding of the industry and its direction of travel
