Job Description

My client is a leading main contractor in the refurbishment and regeneration sector. Due to continued growth they are seeking a proactive facades CAD designer to work with design and quality control within the external envelope. Typical scope of works will include various façades and cladding systems.

This role is well suited to a candidate with previous CAD, technical and design exposure within the construction industry (ideally facades) that is now looking for an opportunity to join a growing company and develop their career..

Main Technical and non technical elements of the role are detailed below. Some of this will be company specific so we are open to applications from those in a similar role within this area that may not have experience in all elements.

Overall purpose of role


* Managing and auditing of the QC/QA process from start to completion including creation, checking, issuing and tracking forms.

* Fill in and / or checking forms and apply for Building Control & Planning Consent forms as required on the projects.

* Check drawings, drawing issue registers, materials schedule, panels cutting schedule, etc. using relevant information provided (calculations, specifications, original / As Build drawings), where company design is / isn’t applicable.

* Check the technical monitoring, tracking of ECO and non-ECO works, SWIGA, O&M Manual / H&S File and present documentation for approval.

* Liaise with manufacturers, external structural engineers, clients and architects, to provide, obtain, process and store the relevant information.

* Liaise with the relevant departments at tender stage and throughout the life of the project as required.

* Carry out site visits to audit the QC/QA process, spot check the quality and workmanship of the works, attend meetings and address bespoke details / technical queries as part of the ongoing design.

* Attend site on the defects arisen on DLP and completed projects and report.

* Site investigations on potential rainscreen cladding projects.

* Assisting with the design process overall.


A.1. Manage, plan, track and audit the QC/QA process. Refer to item A.

A.2. Create, issue, track, monitor and collate QC/QA forms (ITMP file, Laminates, etc.); the QC/QA forms to be in line with the design, specifications and drawings. Refer to item A.

B.1. Fill in forms, collate, approve and send information for Building Control & Planning Consent. Refer to item B.

C.1. Checking, occasionally creating, monitoring and revision of assigned drawings, drawing issue register and related calculations (u-Value, structural, dead loadings, etc.). Refer to item C.

C.2. Checking, occasionally creating, monitoring and revision of the materials schedule, panels cutting schedule. Refer to item C.

D.1. Track and monitor of the technical information, of the ECO and non-ECO works, SWIGA and present documentation for approval. Refer to item D.

D.2. Check O&M Manual / H&S File information and present documentation for approval. Refer to item D.

E.1. Liaise with manufacturers and third parties including electronic / paper distribution and tracking of the relevant documentation. Electronic distribution may include (Dropbox, email, etc.) Refer to item E.

F.1. Liaise with the Estimating department for the information required when tendering for new projects. Refer to item F.

F.2. Liaise with the Procurement department at tender stages and throughout the life of the project to produce and update Procurement Schedule for the initial design and design changes. Refer to item F.

F.3. Liaise with the H&S department throughout the life of the project for the information required on current and future projects. Refer to item F.

F.4. Liaise with the Commercial, Contract and other relevant departments throughout the life of the project to track design changes and quality issues. Refer to item F.

G.1. Carry out site visits to audit the QC/QA process and spot check the quality and workmanship. Update the project teams and the project manager on the findings. Report to Head of D&Q and P&P Director on the issues found and propose rectification measures. Briefing can be verbally / telephone / text / WhatsApp / email on completion of the site visits. Issue site visit report within 3-5 working days. Montly report issued to the above. Refer to item G.

G.2. Address bespoke details / technical queries and create sketches / request drawings as part of the ongoing design. Respond to ad hoc problems and raise these with Head of D&Q accordingly. Refer to item G.

G.3. Attend site meetings on site and at the client / CA venues regarding current and future projects. Refer to item G.

H.1. Attend site on the defects arisen on DLP and completed projects to assess and report back to Head of D&Q and P&P Director. Refer to item H.

I.1. Prepare, carry out site investigations / opening out and report on the findings on potential rainscreen cladding projects. Refer to item I.

J.1. Be actively involved with the design process overall and deal with parts of the design process on projects as requested. Refer to item J.

Key tasks

* Ensure information is available for site set up in line with requirements, from pre-start to close.

* Assist Head of D&Q advising site management and subcontractors as required.

* As advised by Head of D&Q visit sites on a planned and ad-hoc basis.

* Attend regular meetings with site teams, as required.

* Collate relevant information for ECO works and SWIGA, to pass to client and funder as appropriate.

* Make recommendations for changes, to Head of D&Q.



* CSCS card basic level.

* DBS checked as required for specific sites e.g. schools.

General IT:

* Competent user MS Excel, MS Word, MS Project, Microsoft Outlook email and calendars.

* Expert CAD user.


Understanding the business – Demonstrate understanding of the business and key markets.

Budgeting and finance – Understand cost implications of D&Q issues and solutions, as relevant for each project.

Face to face communication – Demonstrate excellent communication skills throughout your working environment, promoting a collaborative working environment with colleagues and ensuring meetings are run to time, action points are clear and issues are dealt with appropriately. This includes communication in internal meetings, with subcontractors and suppliers and covers listening skills, feedback skills, being assertive, dealing with difficult issues.

Written communication – Demonstrate excellent written skills, such that emails, reports, letters are accurate and error free, with minimal review required by line manager. This includes communication for internal use, client use, subcontractor and supplier use, board reports, other ad hoc reports.

Organisation and time management – Demonstrate excellent organisation and time management skills, such that pre-site set up, design drawings and specifications, weekly and monthly reporting and other deadlines are agreed and met with accuracy and attention to detail, with minimal input required by line manager, managing priorities and expectations throughout.

Managing projects – manage assigned parts of project process to agreed deadlines and schedules, working closely with line manager, SPM and site management team.

Managing clients and suppliers – demonstrate importance of relationship with clients, sub-contractors and other suppliers, through effective face-to-face and written communication, management of their expectations and deadlines
