Principal Electrical Design Engineer – Client side – datacentre design

Global telecoms service provider are seeking an Electrical Engineering expert, who possesses a background in designing electrical systems for critical facilities, to join their expanding UK co-location business. Working within their Design & Projects Division the position offers the successful Electrical Design Engineer / Manager the opportunity to play a key role in the development of their UK portfolio as they double their operation from 50MW of datacentre infrastructure to over 100MW in the next 2 years. Currently operating across 5 sites they are set to build a 6th facility, over 60MW in size, and have a 7th at any early stage of planning.

Reporting directly in the Technical Director, you become responsible for driving MEP technical excellence during the full life cycle of the datacentre with involvement from initial site selection, bid phase, through design and constriction onto commissioning and on-going operation. Full duties will include the following;

• Leading the technical aspect of presales activities and providing technical input to existing customers,

• Developing innovative engineering solutions and driving technical standards and specifications,

• Prepare concept scheme designs and communicate these with contractors to develop build proposals,

• Lead development of technical specifications that capture key design requirements,

• Produce technical designs and prepare / attend Technical Presentations and Design Workshops with Clients with support from the Account Management team,

• Undertake the technical management of external consultants, contractors and suppliers,

• Provide technical support and witnessing to commissioning activities to ensure that installed infrastructure meets the company’s specifications,

To be considered individuals will have extensive expertise in the design of resilient critical electrical systems, likely to be gained in a mission critical environment such as the datacentre, industrial, pharmaceutical, research, oil & gas or energy markets. Additionally, you will possess the following;

• Detailed technical knowledge of the type of large-scale electrical systems installed within DataCentre facilities, including complex electrical distribution systems, UPS, standby generation, and BMS/EMS and controls systems, and a demonstrated understanding of various redundancy topologies of such infrastructure.

• Educated to degree level in a related electrical / power engineering topic,

• You must have outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal, with an ability to articulate complex problems in a clear and methodical way
