For more than 118 years, Backus Hospital has been the primary source of healthcare services for much of Eastern Connecticut. We are home to the only trauma center in New London and Windham counties, and are the only area hospital with LIFE STAR helicopter services. We deliver and coordinate a continuum of high-quality healthcare with the goal of improving the health of our communities.


Supervises the phlebotomy department, including specimen processing and client services, and oversees the Laboratory Quality Management Program for the region. Oversees all operational and technical activities in phlebotomy by working closely with the medical director and administrative director in ensuring all policies and procedures are followed. This person will also ensure that the Laboratory Quality Management programs are reviewed on an annual

basis, are comprehensive in scope, have adequate staff participation, and meet the needs of the region/hospitals to ensure quality laboratory services to all patient groups.

Minimum Requirements

Education: Bachelors degree in one of the physical, chemical, or biological sciences.

Experience: Minimum of 3 years clinical laboratory experience

Licensure, Certification, Registration: Obtains ASCP or equivalent certification within twelve (12) months of date of hire.

Preferred Requirements

Education: Bachelors of Science in Medical Technology - Clinical Laboratory Sciences is preferred.

Experience: Five (5) years of clinical laboratory experience; previous supervisory experience preferred. Previous quality management experience preferred.

Licensure, Certification, Registration: MT (ASCP) or equivalent certification upon hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Ability Requirements:

- Ability to read and understand oral and written instructions, and effectively communicate information.

- Basic computer skills (including opening/reading email, basic internet use).

- Have a Working knowledge of TJC, C AP, C LIA, and FDA regulations as they relate laboratory quality assurance.

- Have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office Software including Excel, Word, and Power Point software.

- Must be able to prepare staff training and competency programs.

- Must have the ability to communicate across medical professions to resolve issues.

- Must be able to create statistical spreadsheets to track and analyze data.

- Must be able to use spreadsheets and databases to track and analyze data. Must be able to lead a group to resolve intradepartmental issues.

- Must have the technical knowledge and knowledge of laboratory quality control rules to determine if testing should be halted and results not reported.

Full-time (40 hours)

7am-330pm. Monday-Friday.
