Support Worker


£12-£15 per hour (depending on experience/skills)

Hours: Part Time - up to 18 hours per week. Driver, with access to a vehicle is preferred. Weekend Flexibility Required.

Our client is looking for a Support Worker who is required to work alongside an individual who has Asperger's (high functioning Autism) who lives in his own home in Camberley. The role will involve gaining a thorough understanding of the individual being supported, the way he communicates and the stresses and anxieties that can have a significant impact on how well he relates to the everyday world. It is therefore imperative that the appointed person is able, over time, to grasp a good understanding of Autism.

Duties of a Support Worker

Medication administration - Ordering/Dispensing into nomad tray
Supporting paying domestic bills
Supporting budgeting in order to manage personal money
Supporting household duties: Shopping, Cooking, Cleaning, Laundry etc
Supporting with personal interests (arranging and attending social events, concerts, maintaining greenhouse etc)
Support with finding and maintaining friendships
Making general appointments for: GP, hairdressers, dentist, Vet etc
Support with looking after pet dog (remembering to collect flea/worming treatment monthly, walking etc)
Liaising with Landlord Agent in relation to maintenance work, inspections - ensuring they make appropriate appointments to visit the house etc
To be part of on-call rota, when/if required.What our client is looking for in a Support Worker

A good understanding of people who are on the Autism Spectrum and want to develop their skills in this area
Strong interpersonal skills are essential: outgoing, energetic, a good sense of humour, patient and persevering, a good listener
Facilitate connections in the community, able to ask and to invite people in whilst including the supported individual at every step
Tolerate anxiety and uncertainty in others (i.e. to remain calm, focused and neutral).
Curious about the supported person's choices, hopes, and values always.
Communicate in calm, clear, consistent manner using appropriate language that the supported person understands/connects with.
Seek honest feedback from the supported person about whether they are helping them to achieve the things they want (and to be able to improve/challenge/develop where possible).
Active listening and mediating skills
Comfortable being alongside the supported person in whatever situation/task they happen to be undertaking
Recognise when their support is no longer required
Deal with strong negative emotions and not take personal criticism personally.Successful candidates of the Support Worker post will be contacted within two weeks of application. If you haven't been contacted within this period, please assume you have been unsuccessful at this time
