Many students graduate from college feeling unsure about their future job prospects. Graduates often choose a career in their chosen field of study, but there are always people who opt for a different route, such as self-employment.

Unlike many other roles, a cab driver allows you to become self-employed and self-sufficient with requiring contacts, a specific skill set or years of experience. So how do you become a taxi driver in the united states?

Licenses

You will be required to gain a taxi license. For example, in New York you would apply for a license from the Taxi and Limousine Commission. But before you can apply for a taxi license, you must first possess a DMV Chauffeurs license.

However, it is important to remember that applying for a license will differ depending upon your state of residence.

Paperwork

In the majority of states, a person wishing to become a taxi driver will be required to submit paperwork. Generally, this includes sending a copy of your driving records to your local DMV for evaluation. You will have to complete a background check, where you may be asked to provide proof of your identity, your Social Security number, medical history or finger prints.

Training

Before you can launch your career as a taxi driver, you will likely be required to attend a taxi school. Required completion time will depend upon state legislation and can range anywhere from 20 to 80 hours. After completing the course, you may be asked to pass an exam. You will have to pay a fee to take the course, but most are reasonably priced and will not break the bank.

Send the Application

When you have completed all of the above steps, you will then have to send off your application to become a taxi driver. To complete the application process, you must have all of the correct paperwork, certificates and personal information as required by your state.

Once your application has been approved, you can buy your own cab. To cut costs, choose a pre-owned taxi.

As a graduate, its time to enter the real world. Many graduates feel pressured to choose a role that relates to their field of study, but there are a variety of options. A career as a taxi driver can be a rewarding one, especially if you are self-employed as you have the flexibility and freedom to choose your own hours. Just dont forget to do your taxes.
